Nestled in the rural hinterland of Victoria’s Surf Coast, Bellbrae Coastal captures the essence of its forested coastal location.
This project exemplifies the successful transformation of a 1940s house into a modern rural retreat, perfectly suited for family life and guest accommodation. The design focuses on respecting the home's character while creating functional and inviting spaces that resonate with the rural setting.
The project prioritised retaining the existing footprint and incorporating original elements. Judicious removal and addition of internal walls increases the functionality, amenity and overall atmosphere of the interior spaces.
The design champions natural materials known for their durability and authenticity. Solid timber, ceramic, and stone create a layered textural quality that feels sophisticated yet refreshingly unpretentious. Tasmanian myrtle floorboards were uncovered and restored and the refurbished fireplace hearth adds warmth, character, and a direct connection to the home's history.
New paving, landscaping, and furniture seamlessly extend the living areas outdoors, creating inviting spaces for relaxation on fine days or simply framing picturesque views when staying indoors.
Maher Design’s approach has enhanced the house's existing character by creating elegantly robust spaces that reflect the surrounding countryside and foster a sense of comfort and authenticity…
Importantly, the design outcome strongly reflects the personalities of our clients, who are passionate art collectors and generous entertainers. The house now serves as a backdrop for their growing collection and a welcoming venue for events and gatherings.
This project serves as an inspiration for those seeking to breathe new life into older homes while staying true to their heritage and creating meaningful spaces that reflect the owners character and resonate with the natural surroundings.
